There are many dogs that are often identified as pit bulls. However, only one breed of dog is recognized as a pit bull by name; the American Pitbull Terrier. It is signifcant to note that the breed recognized as the American Staffordshire Staffordshire Terrier (by the American Kennel Club) may be dual registered with the United Kennel Club as an American Pitbull Terrier.
The title of "pit bull" is more and more becoming a sweeping generalization for any dog that is muscular and/or large (especially if the dog is prone to aggression). Many horror stories of dog attacks incrrectly cite the guilty dog as a pit bull. This presents a serious problem to the American Pitbull Terrier (as well as the American Staffordshire Terrier) by making them seem to be detrimental to public safety. Please take a moment at this time to click on the following link Find the pit bull. Many statistics about dog attacks are grossly incorrect in that they incorrectly group many dogs (including mixed breeds) as pit bulls. The following is a link from the American Temperament Test Society http://www.atts.org/stats1.html. This link contains the ATT's own statistics showing the percentage of each pure dog breed that pass their test.
